Celebrating Dance Choreographers Around the World on International Choreographers Day

On January 9th, 2026, we celebrate an important day in the world of dance, International Choreographers Day! Dance choreographers are among the industry’s top professionals, comprising the individuals who help shape dance through the movements and artistic expressions it represents. Essentially, they are the most important people we work with daily, ensuring that your kids are well-taught and continue to dance with us for years.

In this blog, we will celebrate all dance choreographers around the world and talk about what makes them so important to learn how to dance.

How Someone Becomes a Dance Choreographer

To celebrate International Choreographers Day, we must first talk about how someone becomes a dance choreographer. It’s a step-by-step process that takes several paths for you to follow to accomplish that goal. Learning it at a young age, learning multiple different types of dance, studying it at school, and then eventually learn from someone who is a dance choreographer and assisting them so that that way you can find a spot somewhere through networking and become an official teacher for a studio.

Learning Dance At a Young Age

Like most other professions, learning to dance at a young age is one of your best long-term possibilities of making a name in the industry if you’re looking to make it a dream job. If you can also learn to do different dance styles than just one, it expands your portfolio of experience and gets more eyes on you from trained professionals who are looking for the next up-and-coming great choreographers to take on the next generation of dancers.

Studying Dance for School

The next step for you is to find an opportunity in school to learn more. Having experience on your own time is great and a bonus for educators, but the time spent in school around teachers and other students is a great way for someone to learn even more than before. You will, of course, mainly find this through education after high school, where bachelor’s programs are offered through dance or choreography majors, minors, and concentrations at the collegiate level.

College education will be more than just the physical act of dancing; you will also be able to learn more about the history of dance through its various dance forms, famous dancers, and, most importantly, working with other people to establish a networking connection. These are major benefits to future dance choreographers and something to take advantage of if you have the ability to.

Your Career Path After School

Where you go from here on out after school is over will be a challenge, but with the right amount of education and experience in your portfolio, it opens up a great path forward for you to find work as a dance choreographer. Even though you will graduate with that bachelor’s degree in dance, it will still take some time to find the best position to become a professional dance choreographer.

You may end up beginning your career as an assistant working with an established choreographer who’s been working the job for years and years. You may even find freelance work as a dancer to get yourself out there and work a job that comes your way if you make it through many other people who are trying out for the same position.

Even with some of the challenges you might face on this path to find a job, just know that becoming a great dance choreographer comes from your ability to love dancing and express yourself through its artistic expressions. That’s what’s most important to us at Dansations when we teach your kids how dance. We have great teachers who have worked as dance choreographers, and we want to celebrate them on International Dance Choreographers Day. Dance Choreographer FAQ

How do dance choreographers teach and adapt to different types of dancing?

When your kids come to join us, they can adapt to different dance styles, as our choreographers are diverse in their knowledge of how to teach. Because of that, you should not feel worried if your kids want to learn a specific dance form that wouldn’t be taught by our team at Dansations.

All choreographers learn these different types of dances through countless reps of step-by-step visual performances, verbal cues, and hands-on guidance from other choreographers to assist. Dance is all about complex routines and improvisations that work to create a good balance of learning for anyone. The more work they put into it, and dance choreographers work harder than anyone else to learn as much as possible to go on and teach the next generation what they learned for so many years.

This blog is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of these amazing professionals and their work, while also teaching others how to become one.
